Seen Around Town

Add Image The gas station down the street had this sign up for a few weeks. (Sorry it's fuzzy; I was trying to drive and take a picture. I know--bad idea.) Tough year for the Tigers.

Turkey day in Louisiana

I'll admit it: Louisiana does Thanksgiving right. We stayed in Shreveport this year and celebrated with friends. I'm used to quite a spread of food, but I have never seen anything like this. My photos are horrible (as usual) but let me just give you a run down of the meats that were served:

Four fried turkeys
A fried chicken
Ham
Pork sausage
Duck sausage
Boudain
Brochettes of duck wrapped in bacon

Then we had three types of dressing, some sort of dirty rice and sausage dish, sweet potato casserole, asparagus casserole, corn, green beans, rolls, and I don't even know what else. Matthew and our friend Jason teamed up to fry two turkeys, and I think they made the best ones.

There are three turkeys on this one table.

Fall

For about a week we had the prettiest tree on the street.

And now, what we've all been waiting for ...

It's here. It's here. It's finally HERE. The new couch arrived today. For two years, Matthew and I have been all cuddled up (whether we wanted to be or not) on my little red love seat. Now we can spread out.

Here we are on the little red couch in Florida.

Sunday was our last night of tv-watching on the love seat.

And here we are on our new 93-inch-long sofa. We each have our own space!

Matthew couldn't wait to lie down on it. He walked in from work, kicked off his shoes, and tested it out.

Austin, Part 2

I said there'd be more to come about Austin but, really, nothing that exciting happened. Sadly, I never saw Matthew McConaughey (or Lance Armstrong or Aaron Peirsol or Colt McCoy or any of the other cool celebs/athletes who live there).

I did eat sushi for the second time ever and successfully used chopsticks without totally embarrassing myself (or at least the people I was dining with were too polite to point out that I'm a complete dork). It was actually really good. We ate at Uchi, where Tyson Cole is the chef. He was on "Iron Chef" back in the spring and sent a special dessert to our table to thank us for photographing the restaurant for the magazine.

Domino magazine was in town the same time we were and stayed at the same hotel. I tried to eavesdrop on them one morning, but didn't glean very much. They were doing a travel/shopping story too, and evidently hitting up all the same places we were. I guess that's a good thing.

I would really like to go back to Austin and be more of a tourist. It's only about five or so hours away. Maybe Matthew (my Matthew) and I will make the trip together sometime.

Two interesting photos from the trip:

We photographed this garden shop called Big Red Sun. Some of their arrangements--I guess that's what you'd call them--were really more like works of art. This is a book that they used to display a selection of shells, mosses, and air plants.

If only these armadillo baskets from Uncommon Objects weren't so expensive. I would have bought some for Christmas gifts. (What would you do with this???)

Ironic.

From AJC columnist Jeff Schultz's story on the UGA/AU game:

"The Capitol One Bowl had a representative in attendance Saturday. So did the Independence Bowl. Sorry. But postgame spin notwithstanding, this nine-win team has a Shreveport feel to it."

As a Georgia fan, I'd almost rather the team stay home than come to the Independence Bowl (which doesn't even have a sponsor at this point). As a Georgia fan living in Shreveport, however, it'd be nice to see some red and black around here. But get this, if by some cruel twist of fate a nine-win (possibly 10-win) Georgia team were to receive an invite to lovely Shreveport, I won't even be in town for the game! Matthew and I will be home for Christmas (which we are super excited about).

I'm actually kind of pulling for a Cotton Bowl bid--more respectable and I could drive over to Dallas for it!

Entering Austin City Limits

Arrived in Austin today for a story. Fingers crossed that I run into Matthew McConaughey. I'm such a big fan of his body...of work. You know, he was great in "The Wedding Planner" and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." (Sidenote to my husband, Matthew, in the unlikely event he reads this blog: I'm just kidding. I only have eyes for you!)

The photographer and I are staying at the Hotel San Jose--hip, very hip. And sort of Zen. (You can see some photos here.) You can check out a Polaroid camera, a manual typewriter, and iPods from the front desk. Plus they have a well-edited collection of music and DVDs.

The owner Liz Lambert has several hotel projects going on, including one nearby called Hotel St. Cecilia. Though it's not open yet, I got a sneak preview today and met Liz. Going to be a huge hit, I think.

More to come...

How I Ruined Halloween

Practically since we moved into our new house, I've been looking forward to Halloween. No, I'm not the type to dress up in scary costumes or go overboard with, say, an inflatable spider on the side of my house, but I was really looking forward to living in a neighborhood with sidewalks so I could have trick-or-treaters. Plus, Matthew and I were excited to host a Halloween party and attend the Pumpkin Shine at the park down the street, which you may have read about in an earlier post.

Unfortunately, things didn't go quite as planned. I had to cancel our Spooky Soup Supper on Wednesday because I was completely sidelined with a gallbladder attack--my second attack in three days. My super husband, seeing how much pain I was in, totally jumped into action and managed to get me on the schedule for Friday surgery before I'd ever even met with the surgeon. Not sure how he did it, but I'm glad he did. I met with the surgeon Thursday afternoon and by Friday afternoon, I was one gallbladder lighter. Crazy how surgery to remove an entire organ can be less painful than a gallbladder attack.

Needless to say our Halloween didn't proceed as planned. I couldn't even sit up on Wednesday, much less host a party or go to the Pumpkin Shine. Since the party was canceled, I didn't hand out my cute party favors, and despite really wanting to have trick-or-treaters, I just wasn't feeling up to it Friday night. Matthew and I didn't even carve a pumpkin this year or go to the corn maze. Bummer.

The worst part may be that I've got tons of Halloween candy in the house--the good stuff like Snickers, Reese's, Milky Way, Twix--and I'm not supposed to eat it. But I am feeling much, much better now. Matthew has been taking excellent care of me!

If, like me, you've been underappreciating your gallbladder, take a moment to tell it 'Thank you.' It's what lets you eat all those wonderful, fried Southern foods that are so yummy. I should eventually be able to eat those things again, but I'm trying to watch how much fat I'm eating right now. Of course, I'm also really craving pizza. Y'all have some for me, okay?

Dear Georgia Bulldogs:

How many times can you break a girl's heart?
